International life at Sievo

We all live in our own social bubbles. The people in mine come from over 30 different countries, converse in English and do business with clients all over the world. I meet people with different backgrounds, and hear multiple languages every day. That’s why it’s sometimes hard for me to remember that not all companies are the same.
Sievo was founded in Finland. But our first customer, Lego, was outside of Finland. The third employee who started at Sievo did not speak Finnish. So pretty much from the beginning, Sievo has been doing international business and employing international talent. Being international internally and externally has just always been a part of our company DNA and we pretty much take it for granted. But it really is not.Even today, most employers in Finland require Finnish skills from their employees – and this applies to many companies where the official company language is English. Sometimes the task might actually require the person to be able to speak Finnish. But often this is just xenophobia in disguise: Requiring Finnish skills is just used as a convenient way to keep foreigners out of the workplace. This in an area where Finnish employers still have a lot of room for improvement.
To us, being able to hire international talent has always been a competitive advance: It enables us to tap into a lot more potential, than if we just limited ourselves to the small number of people who happen to speak Finnish. Sievonians from around the world are also able to bring new perspective, forcing us to always think outside of Finland when it comes to things like markets, users, technology and media. And it also helps makie sure that we don’t fall into thinking like Finnish engineers – at least all of the time.
But even if hiring international talent makes business sense, it’s not only about that. It’s also about providing equal opportunities to people who are looking for jobs or who want to advance in their careers. And it’s about making our company culture more vivid and diverse. One of the things that gives our company culture its unique flavour, are the people who come from 30 different countries, and are not afraid to be a little goofy around each other.
That’s also what we wanted to celebrate on this video that shows international talent at Sievo.
